ELL Match: Christina and Odalys

Christina and Odalys meet over Zoom.

Learn more about what English Language Learner, Odalys Vera, and her tutor, Christina (Chris) Norris, think about their experiences with NALC!

Why do you volunteer?

Christina: It gives my life meaning and structure.

How did you find NALC?

Christina: When my retirement was coming up I was looking for activities that I would enjoy. I started tutoring in person and worked with different students each week. Now I’m so happy to be working with Odalys on Zoom from my house. I was a little worried I would be too emotionally involved working with one person, but it has been delightful working with Odalys.

Odalys:  I learned about NALC from a friend at church. I tried starting in other programs and courses, but it was difficult because they were in person and I didn’t have a car, and my schedule was complicated. I couldn’t continue because the times of the classes didn’t work for me.

What has your experience been like?

Odalys: I am happy because I have time to practice English. Chris understands me and my job, she is flexible and I am happy to have this space to learn English. I feel very comfortable working with Chris.

Christina: It is so wonderful that NALC provides the curriculum but then we add to that through our conversations. I get to learn about Odalys’s story, what brought her to the US, and her life.
