ELL Match: Gagana and Anna
Learn more about how English Language Learner, Anna, and her tutor, Gagana, found NALC and about their experience working together!
What brought you to NALC?
Gagana: I was looking at Hands on Nashville for volunteer opportunities. I just moved back home after graduating college and wanted to find a way to give back to the Nashville community.
Anna: I found NALC by advise from librarian in my town Dayton, TN. When I asked her if the library in Dayton offers any language courses she said no, but recommended to google about online classes in big cities libraries. That is how I found out about NALC.
What has your experience been like?
Anna: I have a great experience. My tutor Gagana tries her best to teach me English.I’m still learning it. It is hard for me to speak in English. I don’t feel comfortable and confident.I’m on the way to improve it.
Gagana: I have been tutoring for a little over six months now. This has been such a fulfilling and enjoyable process. I’ve seen my student grow tremendously, build confidence in their abilities, and become more passionate about their life aspirations. Teaching someone English gives them the power to shape their future. I’ve learned so much about other cultures, countries, and languages. I wouldn’t have learned so many lessons if I wasn’t an English tutor.
Why do you volunteer?
Gagana: I am a first-generation Indian-American. My parents struggled with learning English when they first came to the U.S. They spent years trying to improve their confidence in speaking, writing, and reading. I want to help other immigrants build their English knowledge base. It’s not just about being able to converse, but knowing fluent English makes it easier to find job opportunities, socialize, and provide for your family.
