Meet our partner ... Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee

Have you heard that NALC received a $5,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee (CFMT)? These funds will be used to support our programs, and will directly help us to give the gift of literacy to more Nashvillians.

CFMT awarded more than $2.8 million in grants to 435 nonprofit organizations as part of the 2023 annual grantmaking process.

Literacy is how we all understand and are understood in the world. Reading, writing, speaking, and listening are essential – and remarkable – acts of human connection. Literacy transforms the experience of living and allows people to grow into what they want to do – get a better job, read to a child, fulfill a dream.

Yet, one in five Nashville adults is at the lowest level of literacy.

Many visit the Nashville Adult Literacy Council (NALC) to improve their reading, writing, and English-speaking skills. Since our founding in 1982, we’ve grown from a small group of tutors serving around 20 adult learners to serving more than 400 learners annually. But, as of November, there are 500 Nashvillians on our waitlist. These funds and more help us reduce that number.

CFMT awards discretionary grants annually from its unrestricted and field-of-interest funds through an open application process to Middle Tennessee nonprofit organizations addressing community needs and benefiting the well-being of our community through valuable programs and innovative services.

Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee strives to build a more thriving and inclusive community — today and for generations to come —  by transforming thoughtful generosity into positive change. Please visit www.CFMT.org for more.
