NALC offers free literacy tutoring to adults. Tutoring can be done virtually or in-person at public locations, such as your local library. Our offices are currently closed to the public, but in the future, we will likely offer in-person tutoring at the Cohn School in West Nashville.

What makes NALC special?
We work with individuals to develop a unique learning plan based on your needs, goals, and interests. Learners are matched with a tutor based on schedule and location preferences.
What does one-on-one tutoring look like?
Learner-Driven Instruction
NALC currently provides printed materials as well as Learning Upgrade, an online educational program. Other instructional aids and reading materials may be used, depending on learner needs. Lessons are learner-driven, but may include any combination of:
phonics
grammar
vocabulary
reading comprehension
writing
editing
In addition, students choose their own supplementary reading and writing materials. Staff provides ongoing support for students and are available to address any issues or answer any questions you might have.
Learner Requirements
Must be 18 or older.
Must be able to schedule your own appointments.
Must be able to participate in lessons independently (without the aid of another adult).
Materials and guidance provided for additional homework.
English must be your first language. If you are looking for English classes, visit our ELL services.
Time Commitment
Learners and tutors meet one to three hours per week. We suggest meeting once or twice a week for one hour per session. Tutors must commit to three months of working with a learner, but this may be lengthened or shortened depending on learner goals and needs. Of course, this doesn’t mean that a week cannot be missed; we understand people go out of town and things come up.
Meeting Locations
All NALC tutoring must occur in a public place or remote via a computer, phone, or tablet. Tutors and learners are both required to provide their own transportation to in-person tutoring sessions. A tutor and learner may choose to socialize outside of their tutoring sessions. These occasions are independent of our program.
Training for Tutors
All tutors must attend training, regardless of background or experience. All tutors are volunteers.
