Meet Naomi and Rachel
Naomi and Rachel have been working together for a little over a year. They meet each week at the library to practice English, share recipes, and learn about each other’s cultures. When asked why she volunteers, tutor Rachel said, “So many reasons! Initially I signed up to volunteer wanting to be more engaged with my local community and meet new people from different backgrounds. I know from personal experience the challenge of learning a foreign language and hoped I could help someone else learn English. It also feels good to spend an hour or two each week doing something very different from my day-to-day job.”
Naomi heard about NALC through a friend. When asked about her experience as a student at NALC she said, “I really enjoy my classes with my tutor. Even if my speaking is terrible, she listens, tries to understand, and waits for me. When I ask her questions she always tries to give me accurate information and knowledge. She helps me very much. Since starting this class, I have become a little less hesitant to speak English. We sometimes talk about school, education, culture, people, and food in each other's country. It is very fun and educational. I will continue to work hard and hope to be able to speak a lot more.”
