Start Now Program
Due to our program’s growth and success, immediate accommodation for every learner is difficult. In fact, it can take six months or longer for a learner to be matched with a volunteer tutor. Start Now allows learners to get immediate service while waiting to be matched with a long-term volunteer tutor. It also allows volunteer tutors greater scheduling flexibility than the One-on-One Tutor Program.
How does it work?
This program allows adult learners enrolled in our program to make one-hour tutoring appointments. This service operates in our offices in West Nashville and in Antioch. Start Now appointments can be made during the hours listed below.
West Nashville: Daytime: Tuesday – Thursday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Evening: Monday - Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM
Antioch: Daytime: Monday – Friday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Evening: Monday - Thursday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
How can I help?
Volunteers sign up at least a week in advance for one-hour
tutoring appointments as often or as little as their schedules permit. Simply let us know when you’re available during Start Now hours, and we will then schedule a learner to work with you. You will have the opportunity to work with learners from both the Basic Literacy and English Language Learning programs. Start Now allows learners to begin the learning process immediately and keep momentum while waiting for a long-term tutor.
But I’m not a teacher, does that matter?
Absolutely not! As long as you have a desire to make a difference and are fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English, you can help. After training with a Nashville Adult Literacy Council staff member, all you have to do is make an appointment and show up. There is no lesson planning required by the tutor. Lesson plans are created by staff.
How do I get started?
All tutors must attend training, regardless of background or experience. Upcoming training dates for the Start Now program are listed below.
- Wednesday, May 15th, 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the West Nashville Office
- Tuesday, June 11th, 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Antioch Office*
*This training is ONLY for tutors interested in tutoring in Start Now at the Antioch Offfice.
