This guide from the Minnesota Literacy Council provides teachers, tutors, and organizations with the resources to enhance and expand citizenship classes.
Community Needs Assessment for Adult Literacy
This Community Needs Assessment was conducted by the Nashville Chamber of Comerce, and released in 2010. It addresses the effects of illiteracy in the Middle Tennessee area, particularly focusing on illiteracy in the workforce.
GCF Global Learning
This site has free online classes in many subjects including money basics, math, e-mail, and software programs like Office, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Jones Library ESL Center
The Jones Library is a program in the Amherst area providing volunteer tutors, study materials, computer-assisted instruction, citizenship classes, English classes and referrals to adult immigrants. They have extensive resources for ESL tutors and learners, as well as those studying for the Citizenship exam.
The Learning Edge
The Learning Edge is a newspaper for adult learners. This site has stories and activities with sound and video. It also has tests on subjects like math and reading. Subjects include health, safety, work, newspaper ads, household bills, and more. Learners can hear articles read to them and read along with the text. Adult new readers can use this site on their own. Some may need tutor support.
National Assessment of Adult Literacy
The preliminary results to this national test were released in December 2005. The NAAL survey and the literacy levels described have been redesigned for better analysis.
The Northern Edge
The Northern Edge is an online newspaper for adult learners. This site has activities with sound and video. It also has tests on subjects like math and language. Learners can hear the articles read to them and they can read along following the text. Topics include math, learning styles, reading, animals, nature, culture, student writing, maps, paying a telephone bill, and many more.

Use puzzlemaker.com to create word puzzles using the vocabulary you are working on with your learner. Simply provide the website with the words you wish to use, and out comes a puzzle!

Verizon Literacy Campus (VLC) connects literacy organizations, volunteers and people who want to learn more about supporting literacy – and to provide online information to these audiences. VLC’s free online courses aid in learning additional information and skills for anyone interested in learning more about literacy challenges today.
