The Southeast branch of Nashville Public Library is moving! The current branch, located at 2325 Hickory Highlands Drive, will close at 5:00 pm on Sunday, October 5. If you and your learner meet at this library, we encourage you to take a break for a few weeks.
The new Southeast branch library will be located 5260 Hickory Hollow Parkway. The Grand Opening is scheduled for October 21, 10:00 a.m.. For more information, read here.
The Nashville Public Library has a fun Summer Challenge going on now through August 15th! The Summer Challenge encourages children, teens, and adults to complete literacy, cultural, and community activities to earn points. With points earned, participants will receive entry to a local organization like the Adventure Science Center or Cheekwood, a book bag, and a chance to win additional prize drawings.
In addition to English, Registration and Activity Logs are available in Arabic, Kurdish, Somali, and Spanish. We hope you'll encourage your learner to participate in this fun challenge!
Crystal Gimesh started as a volunteer in 2009 fulfilling an internship requirement with Belmont University. Prior to volunteering, she had no idea that anything like this program existed. Crystal enjoyed volunteering in the Start Now Program so much that she continued to volunteer after her internship ended. There were innumerable days where she would arrive for her Start Now tutoring session tired, unmotivated, and frustrated about challenges in her own life only to leave refreshed and optimistic.

Ann Bardone first started with the Nashville Adult Literacy Council as a volunteer in the One-on-One Program in 2004. When her learner moved, she came on as a staff member, working in the office and teaching an English class. Tutoring and teaching were very rewarding experiences, and Ann enjoyed helping others better understand life in the United States.
Ann left Nashville and our program for five years while living in another state, but swiftly returned to the NALC when she moved back in 2010. As Program Assistant, her current role is varied but vital; you may see her around the office, coordinating Start Now, or helping with events. Most One-on-One ...
Hey yogis - here's your chance to support the 1 in 8 Nashville adults we serve while working those muscles! Hot Yoga Plus will be offering a karma class on Sunday, November 3rd at 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. to benefit the Nashville Adult Literacy Council. Donate what you can for an hour of deep stretch yoga class. All levels are welcome.

The 2013 Statewide Adult Literacy Conference, hosted by the Tennessee Literacy Coalition, will be held on Wednesday, October 9 at the downtown branch of the Nashville Public Library. This FREE conference will be an all-day event from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Lunch will be provided, but you must register by October 2nd to ensure you'll get a meal!

For the sports fans, we have been selected as the Charity of the Night for the Wednesday, July 31st Nashville Sounds game. In addition to being present at the game ourselves, one third of online ticket proceeds will be donated directly to our program. Join us at the game, and show your support!
