Basic Literacy
One in eight Nashville adults has below basic literacy skills. Across the state of Tennessee, 53% of adults possess only basic or below basic literacy skills. On a national level, 43% of adult Americans perform in the two lowest levels of literacy. What does this mean? It means that tasks like writing a check and helping a child with homework are challenging. Filling out a job application and reading work-related material is impossible for millions of Americans.
How the Literacy Program Works
All incoming learners attend a literacy orientation. Once this orientation is complete, learners schedule an intake assessment. The assessment encompasses literacy skills used in everyday situations. Testing includes phonemic awareness and life coping skills, such as using calendars, reading the want ads, and choosing food items from a menu. Through this series of tests we determine reading and comprehension levels, which allows us to better serve learners based on their individual needs and goals.
After the assessment each learner is assigned a service that best fits their schedule and location preference. Nashville Adult Literacy Council (NALC) prides itself on providing instruction that is learner-centered.
