ANNUAL STUDENT/TUTOR BANQUET, taking place this year:

We can’t wait to taste all of the wonderful dishes you will prepare (don’t forget to bring a serving spoon!), and we are even more eager to give our learners and tutors the recognition you deserve for your hard work and dedication throughout the year. To RSVP, call the Cohn office at 615-298-8060. Our volunteers are the backbone of this program, so we hope that you will attend and allow us to express our gratitude.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED DAY OF BANQUET

NALC is looking for volunteers to help staff set up the day of banquet. Responsibilities may include decorating the room and tables, setting up chairs, monitoring food lines during the event, or cleaning up and tearing down after the banquet.

If you are interested in helping, please contact our Cohn office at 298-8060, or info@nashvilleliteracy.org. Please be sure to indicate whether you would like to volunteer during the day (10 AM – 2 PM) or in the evening (5 PM – 9 PM).

CONVERSATION CLUB

Conversation club is led by volunteers and is designed to expose learners to day-to-day conversation, culture, and idioms they might not be otherwise exposed to. Tutors are welcome and encouraged to attend with their learners, to keep conversation flowing, and to expose our learners to a variety of accents and dialects. Please note the upcoming Conversation Club dates:

Cohn: November 9 12:00 PM -1:30 PM

and EVERY Tuesday evening 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Antioch: November 16 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

November 30 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

Greetings and welcome to the September issue of Between the Lines! We have so many exciting things coming up, so we are updating you a little earlier than usual this month to make sure you don’t miss a thing! September is International Literacy Month, and we would like to recognize and thank each and every one of you for your contributions towards literacy in this city through the NALC programs! We sincerely appreciate everything you do here!

CONVERSATION CLUB
Conversation Club is back in session! These clubs are led by volunteers and designed to expose learners to day-to-day conversation, culture, and idioms they might not be otherwise exposed to. Tutors are welcome and encouraged to attend with their learners! Daytime dates for the rest of the year have been established and are as follows:

CITIZENSHIP CLASS ENROLLMENT SCHEDULE
If your learner or someone you know is studying for the citizenship test and needs extra help, please encourage them to come to one of the following scheduled registrations:

Wednesday, September 14 at 6PM at Cohn Adult Learning Center: 4805 Park Avenue, Nashville, TN 37209
Monday, September 19 at 6PM at NALC Antioch Location: 325 Rural Hill Road, Antioch, TN 37217

Specific class information will be announced at the enrollments. To be considered eligible to enroll, the learner must present an UNEXPIRED GREENCARD at the time of registration.

AARP Contest
If you are a member of AARP, consider entering the following contest by September 30, 2011:

IN OUR WORDS STORY SUBMISSIONS
We are now collecting learner stories for In Our Words! Every year, NALC compiles a book made up of stories written by our learners about a multitude of topics, including (but not limited to) their experience here at NALC, or life experiences. If your learner is interested in submitting a story, email info@nashvilleliteracy.org to request a permission slip which will enable us to publish their story in In Our Words.

The deadline to submit the story with the permission slip is October 14.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO COORDINATE LEVEL 3 GROUP IN ANTIOCH
If you are interested in leading a level 3 (high beginner) group weekly evening group in Antioch, please contact Julie Kramer at 298-8060 or jkramer@nashvilleliteracy.org.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO WORK SOUTHERN FESTIVAL OF BOOKS, OCTOBER 14 – 16
NALC is looking for volunteers to man a booth in 2-hour increments at the Southern Festival of Books in Nashville, October 14 through October 16. The hours of each day are as follows:

Friday, October 14- 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Saturday, October 15- 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Sunday, October 16- 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM

READING HORIZONS REVIEW
There will be a Reading Horizons review on September 15 at Cohn (room 305) from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. If you would like to sign up for this review class, please contact Sarah Coode at 298-8060 or scoode@nashvilleliteracy.org.

PHONICS REMINDER
The letter C can make two different sounds: /k/ or /s/
C usually sounds like /k/, but when C is followed by e,i, or y, it sounds like an /s/:
