Meet the Staff: Jake Stallard, enrollment assistant

JakeStallardPhoto “I have a passion for learning. I like being motivated with very specific goals. I like to encourage others to set their own goals to better themselves.”

From an early age, Jake Stallard knew that he wanted to be an educator. After earning his undergraduate degree in elementary education from the University of Florida and a master’s in special education from Vanderbilt University, he settled into a career as a special education teacher. “This past year, I taught third graders with special needs at Murrell Elementary School in Nashville. A lot of the children have deficits in literacy skills. I had to adapt general education lessons to simply teach the primary subjects. In addition, I taught basic skills such as literacy, communications and time management.”

At the start of the 2014 school term at Murrell, Jake began a search for a way to do community service. He remembers, “I looked at the Hands on Nashville website, and learned that NALC needed tutors. I signed up for training immediately.” Jake proved to be an exceptionally talented tutor capable of teaching at a variety of levels. In addition, his infectious, positive attitude created comfort and trust among the many learners he taught in Start Now.

Jake was hired as the enrollment assistant in May. In that role, he will assist interested and eligible participants through the enrollment process and provide administrative support to program leaders. “I am so pleased to be at NALC,” says Jake. “Not only does it allow me to set the tone for adults to be in a good place to address literacy issues, but I also feel like I am giving back to the community in a really good way.”
